Transformation & Revelation: From Gormley To Gaga
Antony Gormley is one of several artists who will be part of Transformation And Revelation, an exhibition of drawings, photographs, scale models and costumes, as well as sound, lighting and multi-media installations produced by pioneering British theatre designers, architect and artists.
The exhibition will include preparatory sketches for Sutra, produced by Sadler’s Wells in 2008:
’I was looking for a way to objectify the life of a monk. The boxes were designed at 60 cm × 60 cm × 180 cm: a size that would fit monks of varying ages, physiques and heights, and could then be used as building blocks for a variety of architectures.
The boxes were intended to express containment and to be a foil to the infinite extension of the mind in meditation or the body in Kung. The box becomes a second body and Larbi was able to play on its metaphoric implications; tomb/womb/bath, sentry/box/cave/refuge/boat.
The energy and discipline of the dancers and Larbi’s playful discovery of all the moves that the boxes afforded, made the emptiness of the boxes meaningful and alive.’
