FULL BOWL, 1977 - 1978

FULL BOWL consists of forty mutually dependent bowls. Each bowl is beaten inside the previous one: each the condition out of which the other comes. A total world made out of discrete parts.

It connects the intimate support of the internal body to the cosmological principle of planetary rotation. I wanted this sculpture to be both a palpable everyday thing and at the same time an abstract diagram; something that can be laid out in space, but which is also a concentration of time; something that can be held in the hand yet points to infinite extension.

I like the fact that archaeological record comes principally in the form of ceramic or metal pots, which reveal the process of their own making and are both tools and indexes of survival.
