Babel (words) emerged from a collaboration between myself and choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet. Taking the tale of ‘The Tower of Babel’ as our conceptual starting point, I developed five steel space-frames that would hint at, as well as construct and deconstruct, various intersections of the city – permeable border spaces that came to represent a no man’s land, areas of conflict and moments of shared coexistence between the city’s inhabitants. The dance’s action flowed from the private to the public, the individual to the collective. Choices of faith, space and community are made, and we are reminded that to some the tale of Babel represents the gates to enlightenment and, to others, chaos and confusion.
