New Publication: Body Politic, published by White Cube, 2023
Body Politic is published to mark Antony Gormley’s solo exhibition at White Cube Bermondsey. Conceived in close collaboration with the artist and his studio, this publication provides a comprehensive document of Gormley’s work in the exhibition, which sought to investigate our species’ relationship to its industrially made habitat and how, more than ever before, our need for refuge is in dynamic tension with our need to roam.
Designed by (Studio) Jonathan Hares, this catalogue functions as an intimate guide, precisely reflecting the rhythm of the exhibition. The publication features extensive views of the installation alongside black-and-white reproductions of individual artworks with corresponding details. A long-form essay by Teresa Kittler traces the inception and production of the five new bodies of work, contextualising each within the breadth of Gormley’s practice. Through image and text, material and form, this publication reflects the exhibition’s emphasis on twin notions of sanctuary and control, freedom and discipline, all whilst testing sculpture’s capacity to be a focus for hope as well as fear.
