Stay Installed As Part Of Scape Public Art: Season 2016
Installation of the second sculpture of Stay will complete the Christchurch legacy public artwork by Antony Gormley and will be open to the public to launch the Scape Public Art Season 2016 on Saturday, October 1 in the Northern Quadrangle of the Arts Centre.
Commissioned by the Christchurch City Council Public Art Advisory Group, Stay is comprised of two identical cast iron figures located in different sites in the city. It responds to the context of Christchurch; a city in the process of rebuilding, where retrospect and remembrance intermingle with future plans.
The second figure, which completes the work, will be located in the Northern Quadrangle of the Arts Centre - a site that bears the memory of the effects of the earthquake - in celebration of the site’s restoration and the resilience of the people of Christchurch. The first piece was placed mid-current in the Ōtākaro Avon River last year, offering a point of reflection and contemplation in a natural environment, which seems comparatively unchanged by Christchurch’s recent history.
